A Guide to Top Fashion Trends This Winter

After being cooped up for so long, I’m very much looking forward to swapping my dingy sweatpants for something a little more glam like these faux leather jogger pants. Don’t get me wrong, sweatpants are the best and were the hottest COVID runway trend, but it’s time. Oh, is it time.

What Can We Expect to See This Coming Winter?

Patterns, patterns, and more patterns. From paisley to floral, plaid to houndstooth, you’ll see elements of these looks in dresses, sweater vests, puffer jackets, and more.

Drab is out and color is in, which is quite fitting. It’s time for our world to lift its spirits, get outside, and celebrate life. With a vaccine on its way, I’m looking forward to brightening up the streets with my colorful outfits. While suits have taken a back seat, for now, they’ll return with a bang. Choose a suit color that stands out, works with your skin tone, and makes you feel alive.

The next trend may seem like a contradiction to colorful suits, but winter white is also going to be hot.  Isn’t it always? It’s all about standing out in a crowd, with your mask on of course. Pairing darker accents with winter white will make you pop and feel stylish and sexy. From a tight-knit dress to a fabulous bag, definitely incorporate white into your winter wardrobe.

Jeans will always be in style and once we find those favorite pair that check all the boxes, we can’t give them up. Various types of jeans will always come and go but luckily, skinny jeans are here to stay. What did we do before skinny jeans were a thing?

This winter season, branch out and challenge your fashion boundaries. Go with a high-waisted baggy cargo jean and pair them with a fabulous ankle boot to show off your fashionista side. Branch out from your typical blues and add some washed-out grey to your jean collection. How about a patch-work pattern to take you back to the ’70s? Jeans are a staple but they can also be the star of the show as well.

Speaking of the ’70s, you won’t have to sift through your favorite consignment shops to get the look this season. Pair a striped turtleneck with an a-line skirt and you’re going to turn heads.

If you’re looking to add a new winter coat to your already stuffed closet, go with a quilted coat. While the puffer look is in, the quilted coat is lighter and sleeker. Not to mention, it probably won’t fit in that closet of yours. Be brave with colors and even try sticking with one color from your jacket to your shirt, bottoms, and bag.

Too Many Choices

There are tons of fashion choices for this winter season and it can be overwhelming. If fashion isn’t fun and stresses you out, take a step back and go with what makes sense for you. Are you looking for practical or looking to treat yourself to a trendy piece you’ll wear here and there? Are you copying a certain look that’s a stretch for you or sticking to what makes you feel comfortable and confident? Is your new winter purchase going to break the bank or have you been saving and deserve it? Duh, we all deserve it!

Remember that style is also personal and you don’t have to look like everyone else because a magazine article tells you so. If you don’t feel like you look good in something, don’t purchase it just to fit in and be cool. It may be an amazing addition to your wardrobe, but if you aren’t feeling it, people will see that first.

One and Done

As we all know, trends come and go and then come back again. Before you go out and feel pressured to buy all new pieces, see what tweaks are needed for your wardrobe and shop from there. If your whole closet follows one trend, when that trend is over, you’ll be naked.

If it’s just a puffer jacket this year, wear that puffer jacket like you own the world. If it’s a new geometric bag, you’ll be a show stopper. If a thick chain is on the brain, go for it. You don’t have to go all out from your head to your toes to be on trend this winter. Pick a body part and go with it.

Do You

Whatever you categorize your personal style as there’s something for everyone. From bohemian chic to biker glam, choose one that expresses who you are. Perhaps you’re someone different every day. How cool is that? Mix and match to create an individual look no one else will be sporting. Don’t worry about what others think. Do you.

Did you know there’s something known as fashion psychology? It’s the study of the impact of clothing choices on the way in which we perceive and judge each other. Unfortunately, society is always judging each other by the way we look. There’s a lot of pressure to dress a certain way and fit in and it can be overpowering.

Many of us have been isolated and mental health is an even bigger issue in the COVID world we still find ourselves in. If you love to go out, look fabulous, and truly enjoy fashion, you haven’t really been able to do so. Glam has pretty much disappeared and so have reasons to show off that stunning silver dress hanging in the closet with the tags still on. We’re a sensitive society right now who is fragile, tired of living with restrictions, and still scared of something we can’t see.

Fashion is something that can make you feel present. It’s an activity that’s pleasurable, satisfying, and one that many take tremendous pride in. Finding that one piece you’ve been looking for or an incredible deal can be addictive. The world of fashion and seasonal trends means a sense of normalcy, which we haven’t had in a long time.

As the world starts to regenerate itself and vaccines are on their way, we will recover and while our priorities might have changed, fashion will always have a special place in our hearts. Now, go clean out your closet so you can make room for that puffer jacket. The good news is it will hide the COVID 15 you gained.
